Vevay
is a scenic river town located in Switzerland County in southeast Indiana along the Ohio River. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,735. Vevay was voted the "4th Coolest Small Town in America" by Budget Travel. It has long been recognized as one of the most important river communities of the 19th century, being a major port of call for most steamboats. The town was founded in 1802 by Swiss immigrants intent on cultivating grapes and producing wine. They were a success and Vevay has a reputation as being home of the first commercial winery in the United States. The town is also known for its Swiss Wine Festival, usually held the last weekend in August. The festival includes ferry rides on the Ohio River, car shows, musical performances, cheerleading competitions, amusement rides, food, arts and crafts, the famed grape stomps and both beer and wine gardens. A fireworks display is held over the river on Saturday night during the festival. Also, since 1797, every 22 years, the Swiss city of Vevay celebrates La fete des Vignerons (The Winegrowers' Festival.) Switzerland County offers many more activities and attractions, including everything from a casino resort and spa to peaceful Amish farms and a beautiful vineyard golf course. Other attractions in Vevay include the Switzerland County Historic Museum, Historic Hoosier Theater and Life on the Ohio (River) museum.

The Southwest Corner of Indiana has a climate with strongly marked seasons. Winters are cold, sometimes bitterly so. The transition from cold to hot temps can produce spring weather with thunderstorms and tornadoes. Oppressive humidity and high temperatures arrive in summer. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year with lower humidity, and mostly sunny skies. Southerly winds from the Gulf of Mexico transports warm, moisture laden air into the state. The warm moist air collides with continental polar air by the jet stream from Canada. Winter may be unusually cold or summer cool if the influence of polar air is persistent. Similarly, a summer may be unusually warm or a winter mild if air of tropical origin predominates.
