Terre-Haute
is located in Vigo County in southwestern Indiana, near the Illinois state border. As of the 2000 census, the population was 59,614. The name of the city is derived from the French phrase meaning "high land," so named by French explorers in the early 18th century to describe the plateau-like rise of land next to the Wabash River. Terre Haute is also home to Indiana State University. Conveniently located just ten minutes from Interstate 70, the city of Terre Haute offers a wide variety of attractions; museums and galleries, historical sites, fine dining and shopping. Some of the places of interest include the Vigo County Historical Museum, a Children's Museum in downtown Terre Haute, the Swope Art Museum, the Turman Art Gallery at Indiana State University and the C.A.N.D.L.E.S Museum of the Holocaust. Several parks and family fun centers are also located in Terre Haute. Collett Park is a 21-acre park that is the oldest in the Terre Haute Park System, and located in a historic neighborhood. It features a horseshoe court, picnic shelters, playground, and tennis courts. Fairbanks Park is one of the largest parks, at 145 acres, and with the Wabash River providing the beautiful backdrop. Visitors enjoy meandering down the Riverwalk in the park, which will soon be part of a trail system in the city. Terre Haute also offers golf at several locations, including the Four Seasons Golf Complex. This 48-acre golf course includes 18-holes, a sports bar, indoor miniature golf and a double decker driving range.

The Central portion of Indiana , called the Till Plains, lies to the south of the Great Lakes Plains. It's part of the great Midwestern Corn Belt and is characterized by low hills and valleys. The climate is classified as humid-continental with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold, sometimes bitterly so, and summers are warm and humid. Monthly average temperatures range from a high of 88.8 degrees in summer to a low of 15.8 degrees in winter. The transition from cold to hot weather can produce an active spring with thunderstorms and tornadoes. Autumn is favored by many residents as a pleasant time of the year with lower humidity than the other seasons, and mostly sunny skies.
