Evansville
is a city located in southwestern Indiana in Vanderburgh County. It's the third largest city in the state and as of the 2000 census, the population was 121,582. However, the total metropolitan area has a population of 342,815. Evansville was settled in 1812 and lies along a gentle horseshoe bend in the Ohio River. It's often referred to as the "River City." Evansville is home to the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana. It's also a popular tourist destination, in part due to a casino that was the first riverboat casino in the state of Indiana. The city if full of attractions, including a lovely Riverfront, several museums, recreational activities, and an eclectic mix of restaurants and shopping. Evansville has an vibrant performing arts scene. The Victory Theatre is a vintage 1,9590-seat venue that is home to the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. The city is also home to a 2,500-seat auditorium downtown and an 8,500-seat amphitheater. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival is a street fair held the first week of October in Evansville and each July the city hosts the Evansville Freedom Festival. Thunder in Ohio, a hydroplane boat race, is also held in Evansville each August. Museums abound in the city, as well, such as the Museums of Arts, History and Science, which houses the stagecoach driven by Calamity Jane. Others include the Reitz Home Museum and the Children's Museum of Evansville. The Angel Mounds State Historic Site, near Evansville, is nationally recognized as one of the best preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the U.S.

The Southwest Corner of Indiana has an invigorating climate with strongly marked seasons. Winters are cold, sometimes bitterly so. Oppressive humidity and high temperatures arrive in summer. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year with lower humidity than the other seasons and mostly sunny skies. The Gulf of Mexico is a major player in Indiana's climate. Southerly winds from the Gulf transport warm, moisture laden air into the state. The warm moist air collides with continental polar air by the jet stream from Canada. Winter may be unusually cold or a summer cool if the influence of polar air is persistent. Similarly, a summer may be unusually warm or a winter mild if air of tropical origin predominates.
