Cannelton
is a small town located in Perry County in southern Indiana, along the Ohio River. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,209 residents. Cannelton is a historic town, home to the Cannelton Cotton Mill, also known as the Indiana Cotton Mill. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1991. Facing the Ohio River, the old cotton mill is 280 feet long and 60 feet wide. Its most striking features are 100-foot twin towers, one housed a fire escape and the other was used for water storage and fire protection. The mills style is Romanesque. Another attraction in the area are the Cannelton Locks and Dam, located about three miles upstream from the town. The Cannelton Locks run parallel to each other on the Indiana side of the Ohio River. There are two locks alongside the dam, the main lock which measures 110 feet by 1,200 feet and the auxiliary lock that is 110 feet by 600 feet. The locks can be filled or emptied in around 8 minutes. The construction of the locks began in July 1963, began operation in December 1966 and were completed April 1967. The dam was completed in 1974. There were 128 acres of overlook property that was initially built during the construction project. In 1995, the property became a wildlife habitat under the U.S. States Fish and Wildlife Service

South-Central Indiana , along the Ohio River, has a four-season, humid continental climate. This region is classified as the Southern Plains and Lowlands of Indiana. This is the hilliest part of the state. Winters are cold, sometimes bitterly so. The transition from cold to hot temps can produce unsettling spring weather with thunderstorms and tornadoes. Oppressive humidity and high temperatures arrive in summer. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year with lower humidity than the other seasons, and mostly sunny skies. March is usually the wettest month of the year and September is the driest. Snowfall is much less along the Ohio River than in the northern part of Indiana, near Lake Michigan.
