Alexandria
is a small city in central Indiana, located in Madison County about 46 miles northeast of Indianapolis. As of the 2000 census, the population was 6,260. The city is located in the heart of rich farm country, which produces corn, oats and wheat. It's also in the Indiana natural gas region, and was one of the principal seats of the glass industry in Indiana - plate glass, lamp chimneys, mirrors, etc., were once manufactured here. The town of Alexandria is also known as Small Town USA and holds an annual festival to honor this heritage. Alexandria's real claim to fame, however, is for being home to what is lauded by the Guinness Book of World Records as the worlds largest ball of paint. This is not just a hollow shell of a ball filled with paint; it's a solid mass of thousands of hardened, thin layers of paint, methodically applied atop each other month after month, year after year. The ball of paint is kept in the home of the original owner and is seen by appointment only. Central Indiana has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and warm, humid summers. Temperatures generally diverge somewhat from the north and south sections of the state, with the annual mean temperature being 49 degrees F. in the north and 57 degrees F. in the south. While droughts occasionally occur in the southern region, rainfall totals are usually equally distributed throughout the state. The annual snowfall in Indiana averages less than 22 inches. Indiana is one of the most tornado-prone states in the country. Despite its vulnerability, however, Indiana is not a part of tornado alley.
